THE MISSION: Collaborate with Adobe and Prime Video to create a
Rings Of Power-inspired splash screen for Adobe InDesign.
We opted for a line engraved Illustration style, based on the elaborate hard-cover book designs of the past.
Each element (the face, each piece of clothing) was shaded separately using a technique I developed
using Hard Mix Blending Mode. The basics are outlined in this Texturelabs tutorial!
Hand-drawn outlines and details were added to emphasize the style and complete the composition. The most difficult element was the hair. The key was to create some custom hair brushes in Adobe Illustrator.
The illustration was created in black, white and grey. In a separate document, Each color was then composited separately to represent a part of the analogue process. The white became an embossed gold foil, the grey became the cloth mid-ground, and the black became a debossed navy blue ink.
